Artist Statement

I began sewing at a very early age as an "assistant" to my grandmother who
was a dressmaker. As time went by, an return for pressing, ripping,
hemming, cutting, etc. she taught me to "embroider" on an old Singer
treadle machine.
Thread painting was not a term she used, however she told me many times her
needle was her paintbrush and her thread was her paint. I used free motion
embroidery as embellishment quite often as naturally as sewing on a button.
In 1977, I was teaching Fashion Merchandising at a college in
Melbourne, Florida and was asked by my boss to please offer free motion
machine embroidery as an adult education course. I have been teaching
machine needle arts, including thread painting and creative arts
on the sewing machine since that day.

I love the freedom of being able to use this medium to put onto fabric
whatever is in my heart or head. My goal is to educate, encourage, and inspire.
It is an absolute joy to share this pathway to a new world with my students.
We share fun and laughter while learning to use the sewing machine as a
multi-use tool to explore and encourage creativity.
